What is Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)?

Active Noise Cancellation, commonly known as ANC, uses microphones and electronic processing to reduce unwanted background noise.

Tiny microphones on your headphones or earbuds detect sounds around you. The headphones then generate an opposing sound wave to reduce the amount of that noise reaching your ears.

ANC works particularly well with continuous, low-frequency sounds, such as:

Does ANC Block Everything?

Instead of reducing outside noise, these modes use the microphones to intentionally let environmental sounds through.

This can be useful when you're ordering coffee, talking to someone, listening for MRT announcements or walking somewhere where you need greater awareness of your surroundings.
