Open-back headphones have long been a favourite among listeners who value a spacious soundstage, natural presentation and an airy listening experience. Traditionally, however, that experience has largely meant sitting down with a wired pair of headphones connected to a dedicated audio setup.
The new Audio-Technica ATH-AL5NC takes a very different approach. The result is an unusual proposition: a wireless headphone designed to retain many of the qualities people seek from traditional open-back headphones.
Bringing Open-Back Listening Into the Wireless World
The defining feature of the ATH-AL5NC is its open-back construction.
Unlike closed-back headphones, which largely seal the rear of the driver, an open-back headphone allows air to move through the earcup housing. This approach is typically associated with a more open and spacious presentation.
Audio-Technica has equipped the ATH-AL5NC with specially developed 53 mm dynamic drivers, designed to produce a wide and detailed soundstage with a natural presentation. The open housings also improve airflow around the ears, helping reduce heat during longer listening sessions.
At just 240 g, the ATH-AL5NC is also remarkably light for a full-sized wireless headphone. Audio-Technica specifically highlights its low-clamping-pressure design as part of its focus on long-term wearing comfort.
For listeners accustomed to heavier ANC headphones, that combination of an open housing, lower heat build-up and light weight could make the ATH-AL5NC particularly interesting for long sessions at a desk.
High-Resolution Wireless Audio with LDAC
Going wireless doesn't necessarily mean giving up high-resolution playback.
The ATH-AL5NC supports LDAC, AAC and SBC, with LDAC enabling high-resolution wireless audio of up to 24-bit/96 kHz with compatible devices.
Its core headphone specifications include a frequency response of 20 Hz–40 kHz, sensitivity of 103 dB/mW and impedance of 52 ohms. The specification sheet also lists Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity.
This makes the ATH-AL5NC particularly interesting for listeners who want some of the character of an audiophile open-back headphone without having to remain physically connected to a desktop amplifier, DAC or music player.
ANC on an Open-Back Headphone?
This is where the ATH-AL5NC becomes especially unusual.
Audio-Technica has incorporated active noise cancellation into an open-back headphone.
That might initially sound contradictory. Open-back headphones deliberately allow outside sound to remain audible, whereas ANC headphones normally attempt to isolate the listener.
The intention here is somewhat different. Audio-Technica describes the noise-cancellation system as useful for reducing distractions such as HVAC noise, outside traffic and other ambient sounds when listening or working at home. ANC can also operate during both wireless and wired listening.
So rather than turning the ATH-AL5NC into a conventional sealed travel headphone, ANC complements the open-back design by helping reduce certain environmental distractions while retaining its more open listening concept.
There is one important consideration: open-back headphones naturally leak sound. Audio-Technica explicitly notes that sound leakage remains audible at higher listening levels.
Sound Leakage Prevention Mode
Interestingly, Audio-Technica has also introduced a Sound Leakage Prevention Mode.
The feature is intended to make it easier to use the ATH-AL5NC around other people without disturbing them.
It does not change the fundamental reality that this remains an open-back headphone—Audio-Technica still cautions that leakage can be audible at higher volumes—but it gives the ATH-AL5NC additional flexibility compared with a conventional open-back model.
That makes the headphone potentially more practical for shared home offices, gaming rooms and other indoor environments.
Up to 75 Hours of Battery Life
Battery endurance is another major strength.
With noise cancellation switched off, the ATH-AL5NC offers up to 75 hours of continuous playback. A 15-minute quick charge provides up to 8 hours of playback.
With ANC enabled, battery life is rated at up to 50 hours, while a 15-minute charge provides approximately 5 hours of listening.
For a headphone intended to move between music, work and gaming throughout the day, that substantially reduces the need for frequent charging.
Designed for Music, Work and Gaming
The ATH-AL5NC isn't positioned purely as a music headphone.
A built-in microphone enables voice communication for virtual meetings and gaming, while Audio-Technica's Low Latency Mode improves synchronization between sound and video when streaming content or playing games.
It also supports Bluetooth multipoint, allowing the headphones to remain connected to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. You could, for example, use the ATH-AL5NC with a computer while remaining connected to your smartphone.
For users who spend much of the day at a desk, this is where the combination starts to make sense: one headphone can potentially handle focused music listening, video calls, gaming and entertainment without repeatedly swapping equipment.
A-T Connect App Adds More Control
Further customization is available through the Audio-Technica Connect app.
Users can fine-tune the EQ, select EQ presets or a flat setting, change Bluetooth codecs and even locate misplaced headphones. The ATH-AL5NC also incorporates Audio-Technica's Soundscape function, which can play nature sounds, masking noise for concentration or sounds intended for meditation.
These features push the ATH-AL5NC beyond the traditional concept of an open-back audiophile headphone and toward something designed for much broader everyday use.
Wireless When You Want It, Wired When You Need It
Audio-Technica hasn't abandoned the cable either.
The ATH-AL5NC includes a 1.2 m cable with a 3.5 mm stereo mini-plug, together with an in-line microphone and controls. This provides a straightforward wired option whenever Bluetooth isn't appropriate or when the listener simply prefers a physical connection.
The headphones can also fold flat and come with a carrying pouch for storage.
Who Is the ATH-AL5NC For?
The ATH-AL5NC makes the most sense for someone who appreciates the spacious presentation of open-back headphones but finds conventional wired open-back models too restrictive for everyday use.
It brings together several characteristics that are rarely found in one headphone: open-back acoustics, wireless freedom, LDAC high-resolution audio, ANC, multipoint connectivity, low-latency operation and exceptionally long battery life.
It may be particularly appealing for home listeners, desktop users, gamers and remote workers who want better sound without being permanently tethered to their equipment.
For commuting on a noisy train or aircraft, however, a traditional closed-back ANC headphone would generally remain the more natural choice because the ATH-AL5NC intentionally retains an open acoustic design.

The Audio-Technica ATH-AL5NC is interesting because it doesn't simply try to turn an existing audiophile headphone into another Bluetooth model.
Instead, it asks a different question: what if the qualities people enjoy about open-back listening could be made practical enough to use throughout the day?
